Sayan Bali, Ubud's rural area

Sayan Bali

It's true that you can never get enough of Bali. In Bali, there is always something new to discover, whether it's a new take on raw food, new surf beaches, or uncharted territory. Sayan, a little village beside the famed Ayung River, is located just outside of the tourist town of Ubud. It's a good area to meet locals and get away from touristic Ubud during the high season. The route from Ngurah Rai Airport to Sayan Bali takes 1 hour and 20 minutes via taxi or auto rental. Sayan Bali is the ideal alternative holiday spot for meeting people and finding quiet for a pleasant break.

The Sayan's history is concerned with the evolution of human life across time. Sayan is said to be a combination of the terms "Saiya" and "An," where "Saiya" signifies messenger and "An" refers to a group of people. Sayan's tale cannot be isolated from the fight of the Puri Ubud warriors who were entrusted to garrison Sayan as a stronghold of battle. Sayan is a restricted region for a limited group of persons (Laskar Pemati) who have been dispatched by the Ubud Palace. Because Sayan Bali's western border region was particularly weak at the time, selected knights were assigned to protect and defend the Sayan region, and the chosen knights have now finally blended into a harmonious Sayan community.

Sayan Village has been around since the 1920s. The documentation of traditional Sayan dances and music by world-renowned scientists such as Colin McPhee Estate, Ethnomusicologist from California who successfully documented the Sayan children's angklung in 1928, the Sayan Jogging Gamelan in 1931-1938, and the Kebyar Duduk Dance by Sayan artist I Wayan Sampih from 1932-1935. Furthermore, Miguel Covarrubias, a Mexican artist, ethnic scientist, and art historian, effectively chronicled the Pendet Dance in the Dalem Sayan Temple from 1930 to 1934.

After seeing Sayan Bali's high artistic and cultural characteristics, a tourist called Mrs. Betty gifted a gamelan set to a gamelan player in Sayan in 1942. Then, in the 1960s, the great Dutch painter, Mr. Arie Smith, created realistic paintings for Sayan young people, who were known as "Young Artists" and have since become extremely recognized across the world.
